Routes Home is intended as a practical guide for outreach staff and other professionals involved in reconnecting European Union (EU) nationals who are rough sleeping back to their home country. It aims to increase options for reconnections and to support staff to make appropriate referrals to services in the UK and EU countries.
Routes Home focuses on supported reconnections for people who need additional assistance to return home successfully. It contains information on support available from UK consulates of EU countries, services for vulnerable people in EU countries and good practice guidance for frontline staff and managers.
Routes Home has been developed with the participation of a number of agencies who provide reconnections support to EU nationals in London and elsewhere in England. The good practice guidance is based chiefly on the work of Thames Reach’s London Reconnection Project. The team supports EU rough sleepers across London to return to their home country. Since the team began work in January 2009, it has helped over 1000 vulnerable people to return to their home country.
Routes Home has been commissioned by the GLA, as part of the Mayor’s programme to end rough sleeping in London by 2012, and developed in consultation with CLG and Homeless Link.
