Thames Reach is responding to the current severe weather conditions, with its London Street Rescue service and specialist Street Outreach Response Teams (SORTs) working to get rough sleepers off the streets and into emergency accommodation as quickly as possible.

With the freezing conditions predicted to contine this week the outreach teams are battling to get the homeless off the streets quickly and into warm, sheltered accommodation. Thames Reach's outreach teams have already helped over 200 people off the streets since the cold weather began.

Petra Salva, who manages London Street Rescue, said: “When the weather conditions become this extreme it really becomes a life and death matter for those sleeping out on the streets and we want to make sure nobody is out, sleeping rough in these conditions.

“Homelessness charities and local authorities have responded to the situation by making extra bed spaces available for those who need them.”

A Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is implemented in London when the weather drops below zero degrees centigrade for three consecutive nights.
