Turners turned us around

Turners is a worldwide communications company, which actively promotes volunteering amongst their staff.

On a sunny September Saturday morning, a team of eight volunteers from Turners, an international communications company, arrived at Aberdour Court, a Thames Reach supported housing project for people with mental health issues.

There they faced the challenge of transforming a rather dull residents' communal lounge into a vibrant and appealing relaxation area.

An unused patio area also needed some serious nurturing. Undaunted, Turners' Team Challenge leader Andy Lock had already met with project staff and residents to find out what they would like to do with the space.

With a purse of £750, he forwarded orders to B&Q for paint, brushes, lighting, trellising, garden benches, blinds and plants. When combined with the donations collected from their colleagues, which included rugs, pictures, videos, and CDs, it was clear that this was one serious makeover.

Project manager Cora Conway said: "The volunteers worked so hard. The indoor and outdoor areas are so much brighter and welcoming. Residents are now far more interested in spending time in their new communal space".
