Top London football club Millwall is backing homelessness charity Thames Reach's blanket appeal as the cold weather threatens the lives of rough sleepers.
The club is asking fans to donate spare blankets and sleeping bags to Thames Reach’s London Street Rescue team in its programme for the match against Leicester City on Tuesday 28 December and on the club’s website.
Outreach workers from London Street Rescue go out onto the streets across the capital every night to help rough sleepers come inside into safe, secure accommodation. Thames Reach has helped over 100 people off the streets since the freezing weather began at the end of November.
Thames Reach Chief Executive Jeremy Swain said: “The severe weather conditions mean it really is a matter of life and death for London’s rough sleepers. The best place is off the street in somewhere warm, dry and secure. But for those people who won’t come inside we need to make sure they are protected against the elements.
“We are enormously grateful for the support of Millwall Football Club and the club’s fantastic fans who can play a vital role in helping rough sleepers survive this bitter weather.”
