Thames Reach has been recognised as one of Britain’s top employers in the Sunday Times Best 100 Companies to Work For list.

Ranked 74th in this survey of mid-sized employers in the UK, Thames Reach was the only homelessness organisation to make the top 100.

It was also one of only three charities to make this list, which gives a guide to staff satisfaction at organisations with between 250 and 5,000 staff.

The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For 2007

The views of more than 72,000 employees across 273 mid-size firms determined the rankings.

Richard Caseby, managing editor of the Sunday Times, said: “There is no anonymous panel of judges. It is the staff who give us a frank, unadulterated insight into their working lives. It takes a brave boss to allow an outside organisation, such as our partner Best Companies Ltd, to survey their people, but the culture in all our winning companies embraces honesty and openness.

“Employees know they can speak freely – and the result is a definitive piece of research.”

Over 50% of Thames Reach’s staff were consulted. The results showed that:

  • 81% think that the organisation makes a positive difference to the world

  • 75% find their work stimulating

  • 85% are aware that their organisation isn’t driven by profit - this was the second best score in the survey.

Staff also felt they were fairly paid for their work relative to others within the organisation and to people in similar positions.

Areas where we didn’t score so highly related to the lack of a sense of family within teams and questions about the balance between work and home life.

Meanwhile, Thames Reach was one of only 107 organisations to receive Two Star Status in the Michelin-style Best Companies Accreditation Scheme, which recognises organisational excellence. The two stars signify 'outstanding' performance.

Howard Rosenthal, human resources manager, said: “Our position in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For list and our Two Star Status will be extremely useful as we recruit new staff to fill the roles we create as the organisation expands.

“We’ve been earmarked as an outstanding employer but we recognise that there are areas we can develop to make ourselves even better.

“What is clear is that it is only with a motivated and engaged workforce that we can achieve our mission of decent homes, supportive relationships and fulfilling lives for the people who use our services.”
